Same Instrument, Different Starts

Our second performance of the year took place at Centre Communities of Brookline. Grace H., flute, Seth G., bassoon, Andrew L., piano/clarinet, and Jason C., clarinet, featuring a program of Schubert, Bozza, Piernè, and even "Moon River"!

Andrew has played both wonderful piano solos and accompaniment at many a Continuo concert, and Jason I know personally as a talented clarinet player from our time together in youth orchestra. But on this concert, we were all so excited to hear Andrew, one of our most senior members, and Jason, joining Continuo this year, play both piano AND clarinet duets.

And of course, we can’t forget Seth, our wonderful bassonist-turned-amateur-clarinet-duet page-turner…

Seth performed Pierne’s “Solo de Concert” with Andrew on piano, while Grace gave a solo beautiful rendition of Eugene Bozza’s “Image” (from memory!).

The last piece on the program was a classic rendition of “Moon River” (if flute, bassoon, and 2 clarinets is classic). Seth shared with the audience that although he was honestly most familiar with a 2019, “bizarre” version of “Moon River”, he only now found he appreciated the beauty of the original.

After the concert, during our usual audience-performer mingling, Grace got a chance to share her experience as a flutist with a senior resident who had recently taken up the flute! It turned out that they once owned the same flute model, although they started at different periods in their lives. For Grace, as for all of us, that conversation was a reminder that music is not just about being the best or becoming a professional, but also for enjoyment, for having fun and being genuine about love for music.
